On July 9th, the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) Ban Ki-moon visited the International Center on Small Hydro Power, attended and delivered an important speech on the “South-South Cooperation for the Climate Change Conference”, jointly hold by the NUDP, UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization) and the International Center on Small Hydro Power (Center). Hongbo Wu, the UN Under-Secretary-General, and Jieyi Liu, China’s Permanent Representative to the UN attended the ceremony. Sunshine Law’s Managing Partner/Director Jane Chen and Dr. Zhanggui Zhou (the Executive Director of the Firm’s ERE Research Center), were invited as the Center’s experts to attend the conference.

According to Mr. Ban, enegry is important in social and economic development, and all nations and the United Nations shall put joint effort to achieve sustainable development agenda in 2030 and to advance world peace and prosperity. China government has carried out close cooperation with UN agencies on small hydro power projects around the world, which was inspiring and successful, said Mr. Ban. He encouraged China to, through the Center as a platform, share technology capacity, knowledge and experience with the developing countries, help deal with the climate change issues, and contribute to the prosperity of human beings. 

Over 100 attendants came from the UN headquarter, the UN China bodies, the Department of International Organizations and Conferences of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Department of International Cooperation, Science and Technology of the Ministry of Water Resources, the Department of Water Resources of Zhejiang Province, and relevant government authorities, enterprises, and research institutes.
